Finding Fourths

In our fractions study, we explored the three images of 1/4 that are above on the right. Students quickly identified and explained how they knew the first and second images show 1/4. There was a lot of discussion about the final image. Some students immediately identified it as showing 1/4. Others were in complete opposition to that idea. After students explained their thinking, on both sides. I folded a couple of pages. I made ones to represent the first two images and students were all together on their thinking. Then I folded the rectangular paper and placed two rectangles over the bottom half of the squares paper. There were audible gasps as students recognized the fourths that looked different. (Not everyone was in agreement, even then, but many students had quite the aha.)
