Free Choice

Free Choice 2 Free Choice 3

Most afternoons, at the end of the day, we have some free choice time. There are lots of options for us, including blocks of different kinds, magnets, brain noodles, and more. It’s a time when we can play, think about things in new ways, and work out problems together.

Buzzing About Books

Buzzing 2 Buzzing 3

We read independently every day. Often we are so excited about our books it is hard to not turn to a friend to talk about them. So we make sure we have time to do that. At the end of our independent reading time we turn to ‘buzz’ with a friend about our books. We call it ‘buzzing’ because the room is full of buzzing voices talking excitedly about their books.

Buzzing 4 Buzzing 5

During our reading and writing time each day we have a work station to do. Some work stations help us practice high frequency words, words that we read and write a lot. We have a library work station at which we can get new books to read, read magazines and the Kids Post, or read our morning messages.

Reading Pictures

Wordless Picture Books 2 Wordless Picture Books 3

As we learn to read one thing that is helpful is looking at the pictures. In order to practice, we read the pictures in books without words. A big part of reading is thinking about what is happening in the story or what you are learning. We can do that through pictures.

Wordless Picture Books 4 Wordless Picture Books 5
